PROGRAM MISSION AND OBJECTIVE It is expected that on completion of the diploma Program in
Medical Massage therapy, the graduates will have attained knowledge,
attitudes, competencies and
skills through a well balanced Program integrating the theory of
Basic Medical sciences, Anatomy and Physiology and the elements, principles and practices of Therapeutic Massage. The Program blends training in medical massage therapy with personal and professional development, preparing and developing graduates to enter a career of therapeutic massage.
- Integrating Basic
Medical sciences with theory and practice of
therapeutic massage, through a well balance Program,
in order to prepare students for entry-level
positions in the healthcare system as professional
massage therapists.
Through well planned and implemented classes
students acquire a scientific, proficient business
and technical approach to deal with the soft tissue
of the human body, as well as prognosis, assessment,
and massage therapy with respect to medical
conditions in both sexes
- Combine the sciences, theory, technical skills, and professional skills into a practical competency-based design
- Process information from Subjective Objective Assessment Plan
(S.O.A.P) and develop and administer treatment plan
- Prepare and implement a treatment plan according to the S.O.A.P of
client/ patient management and care including appropriate referral, clear and
concise records
- Assure the General Health status of clients/ patients through observation, data collection from sources including the medical history, soft tissue examinations, and body readings, for indication and contraindication of massage.
- Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for the rights of individuals in a multicultural society
- Maintain effective therapist patient relationships especially those involving the patient education on their condition
- Professional competence-: knowledge of health care system, draping and ethical/ legal issues
- Practice massage therapy within the ambit of professional medical ethics and law
- Maintain quality assurance initiative
- Provide the requisite knowledge and skill for more advanced courses
- Produce graduates with the highest level of professionalism, skills and competency
- Function as a member of the healthcare team

- PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
HUMAN ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
Anatomy is defined as the study of the gross structure of the body or the study of an organism and the interrelations of its part e.g. when we describe the skeleton or another anatomic part and how they relate to one another, we describe anatomy.

- PHYSIOLOGY
- Is the science and study of the vital processes, mechanisms and functions of an organ or system of organs. When we describe how the organs or parts of the body function and how their functions relate to one another we refer to the skin, the skeletal system, the muscular system, the nervous system, circulation system, endocrine system and to have general knowledge on the respiratory, digestive, excretory and reproductive system.

- KINESIOLOGY
- Is the scientific study of muscular activity and the anatomy, physiology and mechanism of body movement. This course will be taught through visual aids, texts and hands on palpation with in-depth study of muscles, joints and the dynamics of movements.
PATHOLOGY
- Is the study of the structural and functional change caused by disease. In this class students will be focused on commonly encountered conditions that will be manifested by stress, injuries and chronic maladies.
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
- Students will be able to appreciate and apply information in the context in which it is used in the medical environment.

HIV/CPR/First Aid
- Defines aids in
detail, identify behaviors that could result in
transmission of HIV. First aid CPR
describes the steps to perform CPR.

THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION
- - is personal health service
employing various soft tissue manipulation for
the improvement of the client's health and well
being, therefore, the massage practitioner has
an ethical responsibility to the public and to
individual clients. In addition to being
technically well trained, the practitioner must
understand the laws, rules and regulations
limitation and allied modalities obligation
concerning the practice of massage. This part of
the study is based on the techniques of Swedish
massage as developed by Ling, Mezger, Tappan et
al. The three areas covered are

- 1. Theory/Allied
Modalities
2. Practice
The topics include the history of massage, the medical principles for indications and contraindications as well as effects and benefits. Emphasis placed on proper body mechanics for the therapist, client draping, clinic preparation classes, safety and sanitation, procedures for completing full body massage and written testing. This section is also based on the theory of touch (see allied modalities). This system incorporates the mind, body and spirit (the holistic approach).

PRACTICAL STUDENT CLINIC
- To allow the student the practical hands
on experience aspect of this course, with
demonstrations by instructors, to practice
in the presence of instructors, make
comments and queries to be discussed with
any of our clinic instructors.
Students will practice on each other and do
practical in a clinic setting supervised by
instructor. Students will bring for
their supervised practical sessions, three
(3)different clients for one (1) hour
session each for ten (10) Saturdays from
1-4pm.

- ALLIED MODALITIES & RELATED SUBJECTS
This section gives additional knowledge and information to show that massage is related to other health areas and can safely work in collaboration to aid in the relief of pain and stress giving the client maximum comfort.

INTRODUCTION TO SPA TECHNIQUES

Massage therapists in spas have
the opportunity to do a wide
range of new treatments that
appeal to widely traveled spa
guests who are looking for new
and more exotic body therapies.
There is a strong trend to
integrate spa techniques with
the massage. Areas of
study will include History of
Spas, Body wraps, Body Treatment
and treatment development,
Exfoliation, Mud treatments and
Seaweed treatments.

BUSINESS

This course gives the students
the guidelines for starting and
managing their own business,
partnership, information on
insurance procedures, record
keeping, marketing and most of
all factors to consider before
opening massage business.
Familiarity, with the massage
therapy Act B of 1998. The
importance of certification,
license, personal and business
ethics for the massage therapist
RESEARCH PAPER-111 Hours
Students are required to choose a topic related to therapeutic massage and must consist of 1200 - 1500 words, to be submitted in the third term (2 copies). In addition, students will be required to present research material to a panel of examiners.
